Domination

Fans of real-time strategy and first-person shooter games have seemingly endless choices waiting for them at the local software hut. Gamers who like turn-based strategy games have more limited options. Wargaming.net's futuristic game Domination helps to broaden the selection somewhat. This hex-based game is the follow-up to wargaming.net's Massive Assault. Little has changed here in terms of gameplay but Domination does offer up loads of new single player content and a few new tweaks to the game's graphics.
There are two massive campaigns here, one for the evil Phantom League, one for the goodie-two-shoes Free Nations Union. Though each side has some key philosophical differences, the differences between their available units are almost entirely cosmetic. Almost all of the units on a given side has an equivalent on the other side; the FNU mortar is exactly the same as the League's scorcher unit, the bomber is the same as the pteroplane, etc. The few differences between the sides are that the League has a few extra super units and an aerial transport, while the FNU has an attack copter and an amphibious battle platform. While these small differences can affect your strategies a bit, both sides play pretty much identically.
The World at War game type is much more interesting. Fought over a variety of planets, it makes great use of Domination's new "secret allies" concept. Each side is allowed to disclose a set number of territories as allies during the course of the game. This is a great way to suddenly surprise your enemy by launching an attack from an unpredictable direction. Territories that aren't allied with either player are fair game for invasion but once you invade a neutral territory, the neutral garrisons will go over to the side of your enemy. While it's a nice way to balance the game, it makes it impossible to actually surprise an enemy.
The two campaigns and World at War modes offer up loads of missions, but there's also a Career mode that lets you advance from lowly peon in your army to the head cheese of the whole operation. There's a story that goes along with these missions but it's as ridiculous as it is forgettable. After a few hours, you'll probably just skip past all the exposition to get right to the action. The missions in the campaign (and in the rest of the game) are short enough that you can get your fix very quickly. There are a variety of standalone single missions as well if the commitment of the overall campaign is too much for you.

Space Empires IV

Space Empires IV is a turn-based 4Xstrategy computer game developed by Malfador Machinations and published by Strategy First as part of the Space Empires series in which players control an alien race in an attempt at galactic conquest.

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to Civilization style games in the sense that one controls the overall organization of the alien race on a scale far above that of controlling individual persons. Combat is not necessitated by the game itself and players are free to engage in political negotiations with their rivals. The mechanics of the game allow players to either improve their planets' resource production through the construction of facilities or build more ships with which to defend their empires.
There are multiple ways that players can conquer other empires, depending on the setting enabled by the player during set up. The most direct way is destroying the colonies and home world of their rivals using ever more devastating weapons. Further along the tech tree this is facilitated by technology, allowing the player to destroy planets whole and manipulate stars turning entire systems into black holes or storms. Other ways to win include diplomatic allying with all races and maintaining peace throughout the universe (a difficult feat with rival computer players fighting amongst themselves).

Mechanisms

In Space Empires IV the galaxy is represented by a number of discrete areas called "systems" which represent complete star systems. These are usually connected to each other by "warp points" through which a ship or fleet can travel to another system. The standard system comprises a number of stars, planets, asteroids, storms and warp points. Some stars may be more prone to going supernova which will destroy the entire system, or may cause effects to ships passing by. Planets are either ice, rock or gas types, with an atmosphere of none, hydrogen, oxygen, methane or carbon dioxide. They range in size of tiny, small, medium, large, and huge. Planets also have "conditions", the quality of which affects the rate of reproduction for inhabitants and their happiness on the world. A planet also has a number of values for "mineral", "organic" and "radioactive" content. Once colonized, a player may build facilities to mine these resources on a world. The rate of production of each resource is modified by the values for each planet.

Races

Space Empires IV allows the player to select one of a variety of alien races to represent them and then compete against a selection of the others. As well as the usual human race, the Terrans, there are a number of races which are otherwise notable due to their propensity for successful play. The Praetorian empire will often become a very formidable rival due to their expansionist tendencies and peaceful nature. Likewise the Eee consortium's high intelligence will often grant them technological superiority in the late game. By contrast the Xi-Chung hive's aggressive tendencies and technologies generally make them dangerous foes in the early game only.

Technology

In Space Empires IV an empire's facilities and ships become steadily more powerful, efficient and varied as they conduct scientific research. This is simulated by the turn-by-turn production of research points which can be channeled towards specific projects. When the project is completed the player is rewarded with new or better facilities, ship components or new research projects. Most fields can be advanced multiple times, becoming progressively more expensive but yielding better results. The large size of the "technology tree" system allows for a high degree of technological variation between empires.
Some empires have access to special research lines known as the "racial techs". In the standard games the racial techs are Organic, Crystalline, Psychic, Temporal and Deeply Religious. By researching these lines the empire gains access to facilities and ship components not available to other empires. Often these are very powerful, such as the Organic Armor, Religious Talisman and Allegiance Subverter ship components.

Etherlords II

Delve into a fantasy world beyond your wildest dreams in Etherlords II: Second Age, a turn-based strategy adventure where four races vie for control of the world in dynamic one-on-one fights. The original Etherlords arrived in late 2001 and offered a visual combat aspect to card-based strategy combat akin to Magic: The Gathering complete with blocking, tapping and counters. The sequel is a more streamlined version and adds some roleplaying elements. Select cards from your deck and each time a card is used, a new round is introduced and new spells become available to you. Game features include five campaigns in a fully 3D environment, non-linear missions, an editor for custom missions and campaigns, and hundreds of spells and creatures to choose from.

Gratuitous Space Battles

Gratuitous Space Battles (GSB) is a video game developed by the UK-based company Positech Games. It was released on November 17, 2009. On one level the title is a space battle simulation consisting of a number of engagements between two opposing fleets of ships. While sometimes assumed to be a real-time strategy (RTS) game based on screenshots, actual gameplay focuses on the setup prior to the battle, making it play more like a tower defense game.

A custom made game engine was produced for the 2D game. Gratuitous Space Battles generally received favourable reviews upon release. Most reviews praised the detailed graphics with some finding the gameplay a little confusing, at least initially.

Plot

As the title suggests, there is no plot per se; the battles are entirely gratuitous. The player is presented with a number of skirmish scenarios in various space locations. Missions are not linked with any particular narrative, nor are there any briefings, debriefings, or scripted sequences: the battles are purely gratuitous.

Battle showing enemy ships to the right

Gratuitous Space Battles challenges players with defeating opposing space fleets through careful pre-battle planning. For each skirmish or engagement, the player has a fixed budget and a maximum number of ships (pilots), as well as various other limitations or rules which influence the outcome of the battle. For example, a given environment may reduce the effectiveness of ship shields, or may reduce weapon ranges. Players must take this information into account when selecting and positioning the ships that form their own fleet. Once players have selected their ships and issued orders to the ships concerning how to engage the enemy fleet, the battle begins.

The battle itself proceeds completely without human interaction, with the outcome being determined entirely based on the initial configuration, rather than on player reflexes or mid-battle decisions. Players are only able to move the camera and speed up the gameplay to four times the normal speed. Customized fleets can be shared online for others to play with.

Honor

Gratuitous Space Battles encourages players to win battles using as few resources as possible by awarding honor for any unspent funds. That is, for each point of budgetary allocation which a player could have spent but did not, a point of honor is awarded upon victory. The game tracks the maximum honor previously awarded per battle at each difficulty level, so players can continue to earn more only by beating their previous best. After amassing a sufficient quantity of honor, it can then be traded (spent) to unlock new ship modules, new ship hull configurations, and new playable alien races

Ship design

As Gratuitous Space Battles consists solely of combat in space (foregoing any of the other elements of a traditional 4X game), it gives players a great deal of flexibility in how ships are designed. For a given playable race, players have a number of hull configurations from which to choose, made up of three different sizes of ships (fighters, frigates, and cruisers). Different ship hulls have different numbers of mounting points for modules and weapons, as well as having various inherent characteristics (in the form of overall bonuses in specific areas). Shield generators, crew quarters, and reactors to power the ship are also able to placed. Players must balance ship cost, weight, speed, power, crew, and offense/defense capabilities in deciding what combat role a given spacecraft will fulfill.

Capitalism II

Trevor Chan's Capitalism II (simplified Chinese: 金融帝国II; traditional Chinese: 金融帝國II; pinyin: Jīn Róng Dì Guó II) is the business simulation video game sequel to the original Capitalism. It was created by Enlight, and published by Ubisoft Entertainment in 2001.

Capitalism II in-game.

The player creates and controls a business empire. This in-depth strategy game covers almost every aspect of business that could be encountered in the real world; including marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, importing, and retailing. It features two new campaigns (Capitalist Campaign and Entrepreneur Campaign), plus an in-depth tutorial.

The gameplay is very similar to the original version. One noticeable difference from Capitalism I is that there are fewer products derived from agricultural resources.

Capitalism II will run on modern versions of Microsoft Windows whereas the previous versions would not.

STRANGE ADVENTURES IN INFINITE SPACE

Explore the galaxy...in 20 minutes or less!

In the 22nd century, colony ships were programmed to search for earthlike planets along trajectories calculated to visit stars with the best likelihood of habitable worlds. One such ship with its crew and passengers in cryostasis traveled over 2300 light years before a suitable planet was found.

Hope is a temperate world located in the Glory system on the edge of a vast nebula often referred to as the Purple Void. The nebula is unique in that it contains many unusual star types and other peculiar phenomena.

Over 100 years have passed since the colonists first arrived. It is a new beginning of deep space exploration. Technology has improved and mankind is no longer dependent on slow cryoships and robot probes. This is the setting of Strange Adventures In Infinite Space.

Sail the high sea of stars in your own deep space exploration vessel. Discover exotic star systems; seek out new technologies, artifacts and lifeforms; boldly blow up stuff where no one has blown up stuff before!

SAIS is a roguelike, which means that the game is different every time it is played. Stars, planets, black holes, nebula mass, alien patrols, items, lifeforms and other encounters are randomized for each new Strange Adventure.

    Playing time: 5-20 minutes
    Number of players: solo
    Difficulty: variable
    Replayability: infinite

The full version of SAIS features:

    21 different ship types
69 different weapons, drives, shields, gadgets and artifacts
    18 alien lifeforms
17 different planet and star types
    7 unique alien races
